Perfluorooctane sulfonates would increase the risks of developing non-viral hepatocellular carcinoma.
These chemicals (PFOS and PFAS) have been used in large quantities in industry for decades. They are found in personal care and beauty products, food packaging, upholstery and non-stick coatings on kitchen utensils such as pots and pans. The problem is that these toxic molecules disperse and accumulate in the environment, slip into food and therefore into our body. Thus, perfluorooctane sulfonates end up in our liver.
The American research team that conducted this new study was based on human liver samples. She collected them as part of an epidemiological analysis. At the base, the study therefore focused on 200,000 inhabitants of Los Angeles and Hawaii. Thus, the scientists were able to study the blood samples taken from 50 people (suffering from liver cancer) before the diagnosis of the disease. The goal was to compare these samples with those of 50 people who did not develop the disease.
A study that leaves no doubt about the harmful effects of PFOS and PFAS on the liver
This comparative study has enabled researchers to discover several types of these famous polyfluoroalkylated substances in blood samples from people who have developed liver cancer. These chemicals were indeed present before the carcinoma develops. The research team even incorporated numbers into their findings. The 10% of people most exposed to perfluorooctane sulfonates 4.5 times more likely to develop liver cancer than those with low levels of these chemicals in their blood.
The study also revealed that these chemical substances would alter the process of glucose metabolism, but also those of bile acids and amino acids. However, all these actions take place in the liver. In addition, these dysfunctions are likely to lead to an accumulation of liver fat. However, this phenomenon onlyincrease the risk of cancer.
Dr. Leda Chatzi, co-author of the study, concluded: “We believe our work provides important insights into the long-term effects of these chemicals on human health, particularly regarding how they can damage normal liver function. This study fills an important gap in our understanding of the true consequences of exposure to these chemicals. »
