In the immediate future, a three-week isolation of the individual applies as long as the symptoms persist (an assessment is carried out by an infectious disease specialist). For contact cases, in the absence of symptoms, isolation does not apply systematically.

Confirmed cases of monkeypox, by date of onset of symptoms, France, May-June 2022 (Santé Publique France).

Repro CL

Known in humans since 1970, monkeypox is a disease considered rare, caused by a virus transmitted to humans by infected animals. In prevention, the European Commission announced on Tuesday the conclusion of a contract for the purchase of more than 100,000 doses of vaccines against monkeypox.

Its symptoms resemble, in less serious, those which one already observed in the past: fever, headaches, muscular pains, dorsal, during the first five days. Itching is common. Then appear rashes, lesions, pustules and finally scabs. These bubbles are more concentrated on the face, palms and soles of the feet. There is no cure for monkeypox, which usually heals on its own, and symptoms last 14 to 21 days.

The virus can be transmitted by direct contact with skin lesions.

“The monkeypox virus can be transmitted by direct contact with skin lesions or mucous membranes of a sick person, as well as by droplets (saliva, sneezes, sputters…)”, specifies Public Health France on its website. In other words, sexual intercourse, with or without penetration, meets these conditions for contamination and having several partners increases the risk of being exposed to the virus.

Eight cases in the region

As of June 15, 2022 at 8 p.m., according to data from Public Health France updated weekly, 125 confirmed cases of monkeypox have been reported on national territory. Eight cases have been identified in New Aquitaine in less than a week, including one case in Bordeaux in the middle of last week. All the cases investigated are men, aged between 20 and 63 years (median age: 35 years).
