While autopilot is meant to add a boost of safety, unfortunately this is not always the case. In a rather tragic case involving Autopilot, a Tesla struck and killed a motorcyclist.
A new road accident involving a Tesla resulted in the death of a motorcyclist. The car – a Tesla Model 3 that was on autopilot – approached a motorcycle and struck it, causing the motorcyclist to fall and die instantly. The accident happened in Draper, Utah, United States. Note that this is not the first time that a Tesla on autopilot has caused a fatal accident. One of the most recent accidents dates from last May, and the crash of a Tesla Model S caused the death of the three passengers of the vehicle.
Regarding this new accident caused by Tesla’s autopilot system, an investigation is currently underway to determine the exact cause. When questioned by law enforcement, the driver of the vehicle said he had not seen the motorcyclist, as he was not actually driving the car. For the moment, it is not known if the driver has been charged or if he will face charges for the responsibilities of the accident. We also do not know the share of responsibility of Elon Musk’s company.
While not all fatal, Tesla autopilot issues have so far caused at least 39 crashes whose 19 fatal.
