Abandoning its Exynos chips, Samsung would team up with Google on a new in-house SoC

Samsung, Google and AMD have been working together since last summer on the design of a future chip that will equip smartphones in the Korean manufacturer’s Galaxy S series.

A significant partnership whose goal is to tickle Apple and its model A chips on their soil, or even specialists like Qualcomm and Mediatek by 2025. A way for Samsung to try to make people forget about the relative failure of their Exynos processors .

A failure, but not a defeat

The Exynos 2200 chips that fitted the Samsung Galaxy S22 were disappointing in terms of performance. So much so that it is now expected that the South Korean giant will instead turn 100% to Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for its soon-to-be-announced Galaxy S23. But this does not prevent the manufacturer from continuing to work on an SoC (system on a chip) performing house.

The company already worked with Google and AMD on various projects. Google will design Tensor chips powering Pixel-series smartphones; and AMD for the Exynos chip’s GPU. But the three players reportedly decided to join forces last summer to develop a new SoC specifically dedicated to future high-end smartphones from Samsung.

A chip for its flagships

According to the various leaks that have been released since this summer, these chips will not arrive until 2025. They will, according to the rumors, be mainly composed of two ARM Cortex-X cores and an AMD graphics processor. Samsung has created a veritable army to achieve its goals. In total, more than 1,000 internal employees from the LSI and Mobile Experience Group divisions would be involved in what would be called the “Dream Platform One Team”.

Production of the chips could begin next year for use in the Galaxy S flagships in 2025. Samsung and its in-house SoC, given their potential targets, would pose a serious technical competitor to Apple, which is also developing in-house. in his iPhones. It could also be that the Samsung chips are based on a 3nm engraving, where the group has already started working on the issue.
