Black tea drinkers live longer than others

According to a new study, drinking at least two cups of black tea every day would help reduce the risk of death. Explanations.

A new good reason not to deprive yourself of a cup of black tea. According to a new study, this hot drink would even help to live (a little) longer. To reach these conclusions, researchers from the US National Cancer Institute surveyed more than 400,000 Britons about their tea consumption. The participants were then followed for about ten years, and the researchers compared self-reported tea consumption with all-cause mortality (cancers, cardiovascular disease, ischemic heart disease, stroke, and respiratory disease).

Results ? This study reports that higher black tea consumption – two or more cups a day – could decrease the risk of death by 9% to 13% compared to non-tea drinkers. “During a median follow-up of 11.2 years, high tea consumption was slightly associated with a lower all-cause mortality risk among those who drank two or more cups daily,” the study notes. The temperature of the tea, or the addition of milk or sugar, did not change the results.

A world-famous drink

These conclusions were published on August 30 in the Annals of Internal Medicine. Black tea is rich in flavonoids, this antioxidant protects the cells of the human body from free radicals and therefore helps to fight against the appearance of certain diseases.

However, these results should be taken with caution because this study is based solely on the observation of the habits and health of the participants. One thing is certain, a cup of tea (green or black) can be safely included as part of a varied and balanced diet. In the world, tea is also the most consumed drink after water.
