Clown masks, 8th red of the season, defeat against Rodez: ASSE continues its free fall

Saint-Etienne sinks. The Saint-Etienne club conceded a seventh defeat of this season in Ligue 2 against Rodez (0-2) on Saturday afternoon, missing the opportunity to give themselves some air in the standings. While the reception of a direct candidate for maintenance had been prepared as a final before the WC cut, ASSE missed its cave of Geoffroy-Guichard. Again this season.

After 15 days, Les Verts are stuck in 19th place with 11 points. The two-month sports break therefore comes at the right time for this historic club, which is living its darkest hours. It remains to be seen whether Sainté will leave with Laurent Batlles in 2023. The former Troyes technician had been announced as very weakened before this crucial match and Saturday’s defeat will not help his cause. Rodez is temporarily out of the red zone.

Clown masks for management

However, the Geoffroy-Guichard public had been there for this duel between poorly classified. But the two conceded goals in the 54th and 60th minutes put an end to this social peace. As soon as the second goal was conceded, the supporters brought out clown masks and once again demanded the resignation of the management. Then the stands emptied little by little.

As they left the enclosure, supporters left their masks hanging on the gates of the stadium, just to get their message across again. On said masks, the faces of the duo Laurent Romeyer – Bernard Caïazzo appear.

We understand their reaction.

Asked by beIN Sports after the meeting, Jean-Philippe Krasso, stunned by the defeat, sided with the fans. “I have no solution, what we do in training will not turn into a match. (…) Losing does not make us happy, there is still a lot of work to do. We understand their reaction..”

The score was even flattering for Laurent Batlles’ men, who let up in the last half hour. Perfect symbol of their frustration: the two-stage sending off of Jimmy Giraudon in the 68th minute. Warned for a charge on an opponent, the defender challenged his penalty for too much and saw red. It is the eighth time this season that ASSE has seen one of its players leave the pitch early.
