As Covid continues to circulate, a recent study warns that re-infections increase the risk of developing health problems and long Covids.
There are now many people who have had Covid twice, three times or even more. Blame it on more infectious variants that continue to circulate strongly. And if reinfection is common, it is not necessarily benign. At least that is the warning of epidemiologist Ziyad Al-Aly, who conducted a study published on November 10 in the journal Nature Medicine, Le Monde reports.
According to the results of this study, reinfection doubled the risk of death and tripled the risk of being hospitalized and developing heart problems.
“All kinds of health problems”
The American researchers based their study on a sample of 443,000 people who had Covid between March 2020 and April 2022. Of this sample, 41,000 people had had Covid at least twice.
With AFP, quoted by our colleagues from 20 minutes, the lead author of the study summarizes: “people who were reinfected had an increased risk of all kinds of unwanted health problems”. Furthermore, the list of induced risks is long: cerebral disorders, kidney diseases, diabetes…
Le Bien Public specifies that the increased risk remains visible six months after reinfection.
