David Gaudu wins ahead of Wout Van Aert in the third stage of the Dauphiné

Second French victory in two days on the Critérium du Dauphiné. David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) offered himself a prestigious victory on Tuesday at the top of Puy de Sancy, during the last ascent of the day. Wout Van Aert (second) takes the yellow and the Frenchman Victor Lafay (Cofidis) completes the podium.

Like a sprinter, David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) threw his bike over the line. At the end of a hilly stage which saw the first explanation between leaders in a final of 6.2 kilometers at 5.6% on average, he came to blow victory in the face and beard of Wout Van Aert. The green jersey, big favorite of this 3rd stage, arms raised on the line, already saw itself winning a second victory on this edition.

Jumbo-Visma worked… for nothing

Primoz Roglic’s team wanted to catch up after the failure of the day before, which saw the breakaway go to the end in Brives-Charensac (Haute-Loire). It’s missed. After letting the TotalEnergies team in the yellow jersey Alexis Vuillermoz regulate the pace of the peloton to control a breakaway resumed a few kilometers from the finish, the Jumbo-Visma team showed their teeth. First by Christophe Laporte, who sacrificed himself to bring the peloton back to the front of the race, then by the Dane Jonas Vingegaard, second in the last Tour de France, and a real blaster on the climb to Sancy. But the victory finally escaped Van Aert and Roglic, to whom the final however suited perfectly. The Slovenian failed to shine despite an ideal positioning in the last kilometer.
