design, date … Tesla finally gives news of the pick-up

Elon Musk reveals that Tesla’s teams got a little “carried away” by the Cybertruck’s design changes – which would have largely delayed the pickup’s release originally scheduled for 2021. But the design changes in question would now be final and “locked”, which allows the vehicle to take a new step towards its commercialization.

Contractor now pegs Cybertruck production start in mid-2023 – a more specific window than “next year” which until now suggested a more vague production start, by the end of the year 2023. Changing the design of the Cybertruck was a key issue to launch the vehicle one day on the roads.

Cybertruck design reportedly now ‘locked’, production start ‘mid 2023’

As it stands, the Cybertruck as Tesla presented it in 2019 could not be approved for use on public roads in most countries around the world. The first criticism was the lack of mandatory equipment like physical mirrors. But also the more general design and the materials used in certain areas.

The body of the Cybertruck serves as an exo-skeleton. But very quickly Euro NCAP and its Australian equivalent pointed out the too high apparent rigidity of this bodywork which obviously lacks compression zones capable of absorbing shocks as on the bodies of more classic cars. In addition, the height of the front bumper, which is flat, is also likely to increase the danger of accidents in the area of the legs.

If we do not know exactly at this stage what Tesla had to modify on the Cybertruck (with the exception of this prototype…), it is certain that the manufacturer will have, among other things, responded to the fears of security organizations and international certification. If production were indeed set to start in mid-2023, the first Cybertruck customers could expect to receive their vehicle in the summer or fall of 2023.

Of course, as always with Elon Musk, this new launch window must be taken with caution. We know the tendency of the entrepreneur to optimistic promises sometimes somewhat disconnected from reality…
