Eczema, psoriasis… this Lozère plant that naturally comes to the rescue of skin diseases

Beware of atopic skin without cortisone.

Treat eczema and psoriasis without cortisone? A bold bet that could change many lives. This bet, Hanane Drissi made it. This 36-year-old Auvergne founded Altheys in 2021.

The company, originally based in Saint-Chély-d’Apcher, is now thinking bigger and has just moved into a 1,300 m² workshop in Albaret-le-Comtal, in the heart of nature. It has four employees and five apprentices, spread over the production facility in Lozère and the store in Clermont-Ferrand.

2.5% of the affected French population

I originally worked at a do-it-yourself natural cosmetics company.explains Hanane Drissi. My initial project was to develop a range of zero-waste liquid herbal teas. But I met in Clermont-Ferrand, where I come from, Daniel Jean, a French pharmacologist known for developing patents and marketing them to large laboratories, such as PiLeJe. I found out that he had created a patent around ribwort plantain, whose molecule called orthoquinone has been shown to have effects on inflammation associated with eczema and psoriasis.”

That’s all it takes for Hanane, a cosmetics enthusiast, and her chemical engineering partner, Pierre Vausselin, native of Lozère, to take advantage of this discovery through a series of creams and cleansing gels for skin with atopic tendencies. It must be said that 2.5% of the French population is now affected by a skin disease. Anxiety due to Covid, stress, wearing a mask has further accelerated the phenomenon.

A post-synchronized process

However, there is no solution that is both natural, cortisone-free and effective. This is what we have tried to do by developing the Zematopic range. A clinical study conducted with 400 people, including children, and 100 pilot pharmacies showed its effectiveness of 90% after one month of treatment.“The company is known for the efficiency of its process and is even today part of the French Eczema Association.

Born in Auvergne, this project quickly found its place in Lozère, where plantain grows as naturally as it is cultivated. “From this plant, we develop a premix in our laboratory, which is a mixture of plantain extract and vegetable glycerin. This is our core business. It combines other natural ingredients. The products are unscented and they are packaged in bottles airless, more hygienic and more economical, as one press is enough to get the appropriate dose.

Following the switch to green, closer to its raw materials, Altheys plans to open brick-and-mortar stores in the department in the coming months.

“Zero waste” liquid herbal tea

It is not only plantain that attracted Hanane and Pierre to the heights of Albaret. The duo also developed emotional regulators, based on the Bach Flower model, and developed the original idea of no-spill liquid herbal tea.

Well-being products from surrounding plantations or wild harvest. “Three people take care of the picking, says Hanane. We only use fresh plants from local and well-established cultures. Once picked, they are processed within an hour through a process of maceration in ethanol.

A cold work that preserves the active ingredients but also the flavor of the plants. “Then we link them according to their medicinal properties. Each herbal tea contains ten plants.”

A tablespoon in a cup, a little water and it’s ready. No more small bags that pollute and overpack.
