Electric car: the three most expensive vehicles on the market

Today, Tesla Magazine invites you to discover the three jewels of the moment. From the Porsche Taycan to the Tesla Model S Plaid, then to the Lucid Air, let’s go for this TOP 3 whose key word is “put your hand in your pocket”!

Porsche Taycan

From the Mission E concept revealed in 2015, the Porsche Taycan has been on the market since the end of 2019.

  • Available in four versions 2S, 4S, Turbo and Turbo S, it combines up to 761 hp and 463 km of range.
  • The Taycan 2S access model is available from 86,254 euros in France, or 20,000 euros less than the old entry-level, the Taycan 4S, displayed at 108,632 €, excluding options.
  • The Turbo is more expensive, from €155,552, the Turbo S being the top of the range with its €189,152.
  • Deliveries started in 2020, except for the 2S, which joined the range later.

Exterior and interior design

The design of the Porsche Taycan is inspired by the Mission E concept itself offering similarities to the 918 Spyder, the rear evoking the 911.

Sporting a body composed of a mixture of aluminium, steel and plastic reinforced with carbon fibers (CFRP), the Taycan is mounted on carbon rims: 21″ at the front and 22″ at the back. The aluminum brakes housed in these wheels are impressive, up to a diameter of 420 mm on the Turbo S, combined with 10-piston calipers.

Able to accommodate up to four passengers, the cabin is noticeable by the many screens, five in number exactly. With touch controls, voice control is of course possible.

Motorization and performance

Similar to those used on the 919 hybrid, two electric motors drive the electric sedan. Particularity, the rear unit has a 2-speed transmission, against one at the front. The base system develops 625 horsepower (460 kW).

An Overboost function, however, distinguishes the Turbo and Turbo S models. The first reaches 500 kW (680 hp), the second 560 kW (761 hp), the torque being respectively 850 and 1,050 Nm.

These features allow the Taycan Turbo S to go from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds, and to pass the bar of 200 km/h and 9.8 seconds. The Turbo is very slightly more modest, with 3.2 seconds and 10.6 seconds.

Battery and autonomy

The lithium-ion battery is located in the vehicle floor and runs the full length between the front and rear axles to ensure even weight distribution.

Announced at 93.4 kWh (408 LG cells), the capacity of the pack allows the Taycan to have from 381 to 463 kilometers of autonomy in the WLTP cycle. The smaller 79.2kWh pack allows up to 407km on the Taycan 2S and 4S.

In short: Porsche Taycan

  • Price: from €86,254
  • Autonomy: 381 to 463 km of autonomy (WLTP)
  • Trunk volume: 530L

Tesla Model S Poster

On the occasion of its conference called “Battery Day”, Tesla announced the launch of the most powerful of all Model S: the Plaid version. Equipped with three electric motors, it accelerates like a sports car and offers spectacular range. As its price… Nearly 630 km of autonomy in real for 130,000 €.

A high price in absolute terms, but which remains very competitive with regard to the level of performance of this extraordinary car.

Exterior and interior design

Coming from the world of computing, the very innovative architecture of this car is similar to that of a rolling smartphone with a battery integrated into the floor and a large, continuously updated touch screen. This architecture also gives it excellent family benefits with three spacious rear seats and two huge trunks.

The latest generation of Tesla Model S is distinguished above all by its completely redesigned interior. The completely redesigned dashboard now consists of a large touch screen in a horizontal position with a redesigned digital counter and a steering wheel without an aviation-type upper spoke called Yoke.

Motorization and performance

Imagine: a Model S equipped with three electric motors delivering a whopping 1,100 horsepower distributed over all four wheels. Enough to allow the machine to go from 0 to 100 km / h in less than 2.1 s, the 400 m standing start are swallowed in less than 9 s and the top speed is announced at 320 km / h. The Tesla Model S Plaid is therefore the brand’s flagship model.

Also, fans notice the presence of widened rear fenders on the Plaid version which bring a fine touch of bestiality. Beneath this discreet coat hides a major modification to the chassis, which includes two new axles in reinforced aluminum incorporating new motors.

Battery and autonomy

On the autonomy side, Tesla announces that it can exceed 840 km.

Accumulating 95 kWh of capacity, the lithium-ion battery pack still consists of Panasonic cells of the Nickel Aluminum Cobalt type, but their integration has been optimized and the voltage increased (350 to 450 V) to deliver more power and receive more when charging.

In a nutshell: Tesla Model S Plaid

  • Price: from €130,000
  • Autonomy: from 630 to 840 km
  • Trunk volume: 793 L

In Europe, the very select club of high-end electric sedans will soon have a new member. Almost a year after its launch in the United States, the Lucid brand wants to sell its Air luxury sedan in Germany as a first step.

  • With its 400 kilometers of autonomy and its 400 horsepower, the entry-level model (Air) should be offered around 60,000 dollars excluding taxes and government aid.
  • As for the high-end version, its production would be limited to 255 copies. Much sportier, it would offer 1000 horsepower and would be sold between 100/150,000 dollars (Air dream Edition), always free of taxes and government aid.
  • However, its shipping price would remain lower than its two competitors, the Porsche Taycan and the Tesla Mode S Plaid.

[EDIT] According to our latest information, the price of the Lucid Air starts at $169,000 (€158,000) for the Dream edition, manufactured in a limited batch of 520 copies. Next comes the Grand Touring, at $139,000 (€130,000). Later, Lucid promises that lower-priced versions will be added to the lineup, eventually arriving at a base price of $77,400 (€72,000) for the Pure version.

Exterior and interior design

Lucid’s Space Concept architecture not only includes the miniaturization of an electric drivetrain and battery pack, but it also extends the passenger cabin forward and aft! giving the Air a unique look. A flowing form uninterrupted by any detail that is not necessary, therefore, Lucid Air is the most aerodynamic luxury car in the world.

In front of the driver is a massive 34-inch curved glass 5K display that appears to float above the dash. During my time with the Porsche Taycan, I really enjoyed its beautiful 16.8-inch curved driver display. The Air’s display is more than twice as long as the Taycan’s and divided into three separate content sections.

The solid glass roof covers the entire cabin almost without interruption. Both front and rear occupants will appreciate the incredible view; the dividing line between inside and outside is blurring.

Motorization and performance

Two-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, Lucid will let customers choose the configuration of its electric sedan.

In “entry level”, it is a 400 horsepower engine that will be offered. As for the top of the range, its performance should flirt with the best supercars. Driven by two electric motors – one per axle – the 1000 horsepower Lucid Air promises dazzling acceleration with a 0 to 96 km/h shot in 2.5 seconds.

Battery and autonomy

Powered by a 113 kWh battery, the top-of-the-range version will offer around 800 kilometers of autonomy. It will be supplemented by other configurations. At the entry level, the Lucid Air should offer 400 kilometers of autonomy, which suggests a pack of 70 to 90 kWh. Once on the market, the Lucid Air will be the fastest electric vehicle in terms of recharging.

Note: The Lucid Air is a vehicle that comes in 4 versions. The Air, the Touring, the Grand Touring and the Dream Edition, the latter being the most upscale.

  • This version offers a 1080 hp engine block, a range of 593 kilometers according to the WLTP cycle, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.5 s and a maximum speed of 270 km/h.
  • It has a compatible ultra fast charge of 350 kW (60% energy in 20 minutes of charge, up to 32 kilometers in one minute).
  • Production of the Lucid Air began at the end of 2020 in the United States. In terms of marketing, we should therefore not expect to see the first copies on American roads before the beginning of 2021 and probably well beyond in Europe.

Summary: Lucid Air

  • Price: from €70,000
  • Autonomy: more than 400 km of autonomy (projected)
  • Trunk volume: 280 L at the front, plus 459 L at the rear
