Emma Raducanu eliminated in the round of 16 of the Madrid tournament by Anhelina Kalinina

Emma Raducanu’s road to the Madrid tournament ends in the round of 16. The world No. 11 lost this Tuesday against the Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina, in three sets and 2h17 of play (6-2, 2-6, 6-4).

After a first set too easily dropped, the Briton, recent quarter-finalist in Stuttgart, recovered well to dominate her opponent and win the second set. Not enough, however, to rally the quarters. Kalinina (37th in the world) was more aggressive in return and broke her young rival twice in the deciding set.

First WTA 1000 quarter-final for Kalinina

The Ukrainian qualified for her first quarter-final in the WTA 1000 tournament. Kalinina (25) had already knocked down two Grand Slam winners in the previous rounds, the American Sloane Stephens in the first round and the Spaniard GarbiƱe Muguruza at the second. It was her very first victory against a top 10 player.

Before the Madrid tournament, the Ukrainian player, still beyond the 150th place in the world a year ago, had never beaten a player in the top 15. In the next round, she will face Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann, world No. , who eliminated Kazakh Elena Rybakina (18th in the world) in straight sets (6-3, 6-1) in the round of 16.
