Fabio Quartararo extends Yamaha contract until 2024

Fabio Quartararo will therefore stay with Yamaha. The Japanese manufacturer announced on Thursday the extension of the reigning world champion’s contract until 2024. The Frenchman thought long and hard before committing again to Yamaha, being skeptical about the level of engine performance of the M1 , which makes several km/h in top speed each season compared to most other manufacturers and in particular Ducati.

At the end of the 2021 season, Fabio Quartararo, just crowned world champion, had publicly expressed reservations about the M1, judging that the delay in terms of engine power would compromise his chances in 2022 of retaining his title. And this despite a high-performance chassis and an ability to compensate on winding circuits for the lack of power in a straight line.

His driving science has worked wonders so far and the Frenchman remains, a few days before the Barcelona Grand Prix (next Sunday), the leader of the world championship.

“I am at an important moment in my career”

The market has been tense in recent days after the announcement of Suzuki’s withdrawal from the championship at the end of the season. Two courted drivers will thus find themselves on the market: Joan Mir and Alex Rins. What blur the tracks and make more complicated the openings at Honda and Ducati.

In addition, Fabio Quartararo’s handling finesse allows him to make the most of the chassis of his M1, but he does not know if his riding style could accommodate the brutality of the Honda and even more so of the Ducati. We saw Valentino Rossi at the height of his art (in 2011 and 2012) never understanding how the Ducati works.

Yamaha believed in me from the start and that’s something I don’t take lightly.Quartararo said. This new agreement is an important decision and I had to think about it. I am at an important moment in my career. (…) I believe in the Yamaha project and I feel they are very motivated. We will, for starters, now be able to focus on the current season. »

Winner in Portugal this season

Fabio Quartararo arrived in MotoGP in 2019 in the manufacturer’s satellite team in tune. In 2021, he joined the house team, recovering Valentino Rossi’s bike and immediately won the world championship, thus becoming the first Frenchman to be crowned in the premier category. He had won five GPs during the season.

This year, after eight Grand Prix, the native of Nice has won in Portugal and, with solid performances throughout the start of the season, is now leader of the championship. He leads Aleix Espargaro by eight points (122 points to 114). Enea Bastianini is third with 94 points, followed by Francesco Bagnaia (81 pts) and Johann Zarco (75).

In 59 GPs contested in MotoGP, Fabio Quartararo has nine victories, 11 pole positions and has been on the podium 24 times.

“You don’t often meet a driver of his caliber”

And the stable to conclude : “We know that Fabio will invest 100% and we have assured that Yamaha will do the same. We will invest in future developments, so that we can fight for the titles in the years to come. » Gain power while maintaining the legendary agility of the M1. Holy challenge.
