Fitzpatrick wins the US Open – L’Équipe

After a high-flying day and an epic duel between Will Zalatoris and Matt Fitzpatrick, it was finally the Englishman who won. On the course of the Country Club of Brookline, the Ryder player completed his US with a card of 68 (-2).

With a total score of -6, the 27-year-old edged out Zalatoris and Scottie Scheffler by one stroke and won his first Major title.

I really have no words to describe what I feel. Becoming a Major winner is a dream come true. We all want to win but to do it here is something special for me. I was really very patient and I can be proud of my day. I told my cad, if I catch 18 greens in regulation, I think we’ll have a good chance of winning. My game was very solid all day. »

Fitzy’s Revenge

And this victory of Matthew Fitzpatrick has a sacred taste of revenge. Already in the game at the last USPGA, the Englishman had missed his last lap and had let the victory slip away. This time, the Sheffield native didn’t pass up the opportunity to put his name on the cup.

And if we had to remember only one shot, it would probably be his masterful exit from the fairway bunker at 18 to get to the green. Where Jon Rahm had taken it twice to get out of the sand during the 3rd round, Fitzy propelled his iron shot 3m50 from the hole. Magical.

I had decided to play a 3 wood at the start of the 18 precisely so as not to be in the bunker and not to have that shot to hit. (laughs). At that time, Billy Foster, my cad, took charge and above all confirmed my choice. When I saw my shot come out of the bunker and take the trajectory I had imagined, I was really relieved. »

With this victory, the Englishman wins his first title on the PGA Tour and becomes the first player since Jack Nicklaus to win on the same course at the US amateur and the US Open.

Fitzpatrick moves up to 10th in the world.
