Gastric reflux: here are the 5 drinks to avoid

Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or “GERD”, refers to a rise in the esophagus of certain liquids present in the stomach. And some drinks tend to aggravate this phenomenon. Here are the ones to avoid when you suffer from this chronic disease.

Coffee

In sensitive people, this beverage can cause reflux or heartburn due to its caffeine content. Indeed, coffee stimulates the secretion of gastric acid.

citrus juice

Ditto for citrus-based juices, such as orange or grapefruit. These drinks can cause irritation of the lining of the esophagus, and therefore amplify the symptoms.

Fizzy drinks

Also be careful not to abuse carbonated drinks. And it doesn’t matter which, water or soda. The gas will create volume in the stomach, and thus promote regurgitation.

The alcohol

Also irritating, alcohol increases the degree of acidity in the stomach and causes relaxation of the sphincter, which normally contracts to prevent the food bolus from rising into the esophagus.

Tea

Another hot drink to avoid: tea. Source of methylxanthine, like coffee, it can also relax the lower esophageal sphincter and increase the reflux of gastric contents.
