Google Chrome will boost the autonomy of your PC with this ingenious feature

Google Chrome is actively working on a nifty feature that should improve your laptop’s battery life. We’re talking about a significant gain here that should benefit all browser users.

Aware that its web browser is energy-intensive, Google continues its efforts to optimize the performance, but also the energy consumption of Chrome. A promising upcoming update that has been spotted in Chrome OS, but will benefit Chrome on all platforms.

Google significantly reduces the consumption of Chrome

It is common knowledge that Google Chrome consumes a lot of system resources on a machine and impacts the autonomy of our laptops. It is by testing version 105 of Chrome OS that the site About Chromebooks spotted an important change regarding the activation of JavaScript on the web pages available in the background.

We are talking here about web pages open in the background that you are not actively viewing or interacting with. Chrome already manages these tabs through a function named “heavy throttling of JavaScript timer wake-ups” which prevents pages opened in the background from executing JavaScript after 5 minutes of inactivity. The new update will lower this limit to 10 seconds.

The idea being that the longer code is allowed to run in the background, the more battery life will be affected. By limiting this execution time, it will reduce energy consumption and improve the autonomy of machines using Chrome.

A significant gain in autonomy for your computer likely

Beyond the technical aspect, the gain in autonomy looks promising. On its Chromium page, Google describes a significant improvement for the endurance of devices using Chromium:

“This should extend battery life. An experiment on the Canary and Dev channels revealed no regressions against our guiding metrics and there are significant (around 10%) improvements in CPU time when all tabs are hidden and quiet. »

But do not get me wrong. That doesn’t mean your laptop will be 10% more durable, but JavaScript code used on web pages you’re not actively viewing will consume 10% less power.

An important nuance, despite the real gain that this should have on the autonomy of machines using Chrome. Indeed, there is a high probability that many Google browser users have several tabs open simultaneously when browsing the Internet.

Chrome is still the most used internet browser in the world with 64.53% market share, far ahead of Safari which comes in second place with 18.84%. In France, the gap is a little less marked with 56.4% for Chrome, 20.52% for Safari and 8.52% for Firefox, which closes the podium.

If you want to go further in your use of the Google browser, we strongly advise you to read these 10 tips that will change your life on Chrome.
