how loss of smell predicts brain decline

Loss of sense of smell due to Covid-19 could portend the onset of cerebral decline.

A new study, relayed by News Medical, is interested in the consequences of Covid-19 on health. And the list of consequences goes on. Experts warn patients with Covid-19 and suffering from a loss of smell. Indeed, the presence of this symptom would increase the risk of “long-term brain decline“.

According to Argentine scientists, those who report anosmia are more likely to suffer from various cognitive disorders. To reach this conclusion, they looked at data from 766 participants between the ages of 55 and 95 who were affected by the virus. Each patient assessed their degree of loss of smell through a test in which they had to identify three distinct smells. In parallel, the researchers also analyzed memory, attention, language and executive function.

Loss of smell and inflammatory response

Results ? Two thirds had functional memory disorders, serious disorders in half of them. In detail, 11.7% suffered from memory problems, 8.3% from impaired attention and executive functions and 11.6% had combined problems. All patients with severe cognitive impairment also had a loss of smell. For the research team, it was the severity of the anosmia that predicted cognitive disorders.

Our data strongly suggests that adults over the age of 60 are more vulnerable to post-Covid cognitive impairment if they had smell dysfunction, regardless of Covid severity.“, reported Dr. Gonzalez-Alem├ín. Quoted by The Sun, Dr. Claire Sexton, senior director of scientific programs and outreach at the Alzheimer’s Association, specifies that “loss of smell is a signal of an inflammatory response in the brain“. Before completing: “We know that inflammation is part of the neurodegenerative process in diseases like Alzheimer’s disease.“. In the future, further research should confirm this correlation.
