Judge Johan Hamel died suddenly at the age of 42

His death occurred suddenly on Tuesday evening, following a stroke during training, the association of elite football referees (SAFE) announced on Wednesday morning. “To his family, relatives and friends, SAFE and the arbitrators send their deepest condolences. Johan we will miss you,” reads the union’s tweet. Johan Hamel has refereed at the highest level since the 2016-2017 season. He refereed 136 Ligue 1 matches and 85 Ligue 2 matches.

His very first appearance in the elite dates back to 6 March 2011 during a Marseille-Lille, where at that time he was mainly officiating in the National, the third division of French football. He had found L1 during the 2015-2016 season.

“Johan, we will miss you”

Like many clubs that paid tribute to him, Girondins de Bordeaux presented “its most sincere condolences to his family and loved ones as well as to the members of the French professional arbitration”, in a tweet.

In Doha, where they are preparing for the World Cup, the six French referees selected for the competition paid tribute to the memory of their “friend”.
