Monkey pox: the disease is gaining ground, the first two deaths outside Africa recorded

Since the beginning of May, more than 18,000 cases of monkey pox or Monkeyoox have been recorded worldwide. This Friday, two deaths were reported outside Africa, in Spain and Brazil.

Monkeypox is gaining territory. The first two deaths outside Africa have just been recorded in recent days. The first man died at the age of 41 in Brazil.

Two deaths in 24 hours

According to the first elements reported by AFP, the victim was followed for “other serious clinical conditions.” According to local media, the latter had serious immunity problems and was undergoing treatment for cancer. The man died Thursday at the Eduardo de Menezes Hospital in Belo Horizonte in the southeast of the country. “It is important to emphasize that he had serious comorbidities, so as not to cause panic in the population. Mortality (linked to this disease) remains very low”, tries to reassure Fábio Baccheretti, the Secretary of Health of Minas Gerais.

In Spain, the Ministry of Health announced the death of a victim carrying monkey pox on Friday. According to the newspaper El Pais the cause of death would be linked to the Monkeypox infection but not only. The patient had encephalitis. This is the first official case in Europe. According to the latest report published by the Spanish Ministry of Health, 4,298 cases have been confirmed in the country since the start of the epidemic.

Worldwide, seven people have died from the disease. The WHO last week triggered the Public Health Emergency of International Concern (USPPI), the highest level of alert. The aim is to strengthen the fight against the virus in all the countries affected.
