Stephen Curry and the Warriors eliminate the Nuggets from a huge Nikola Jokic

Denver had played the perfect game for three quarters. They had controlled the tempo, dominated the debates but they ran out of juice to finish the match, leaving Nikola Jokic alone against the Warriors collective. Led by 8 points at the start of the last quarter, Golden State started with a 16-6 to regain the advantage and did not see the Nuggets again.

With Stephen Curry back in the starting five in place of Kevon Looney, the Warriors kick off with their famous Fast Five. They start with a 7-of-9 on shots to take a seven-point lead and then remain silent for nearly four minutes against Denver’s alert defense, allowing Nikola Jokic and an aggressive Aaron Gordon to keep the Nuggets in ambush (30 -25). Both attacks struggle, the pace slows, and it works for the Nuggets. They pass on a 3-pointer from Will Barton but Klay Thompson puts the two teams back to back just before the break (48-48).

In a sleepy Chase Center, the Warriors continue to outsmart and Denver takes advantage. They start the third quarter with a 16-6 to take a ten-point lead (64-54). As often, it is the activity of Draymond Green, as well as a passage in zone 2-3, which wake up Golden State. Green is more aggressive with the ball in hand, causes two fouls from Jokic, and twice finds Stephen Curry at 3-point to bring the Warriors to -1 (71-70). They start from scratch, however, by offering offensive rebound after offensive rebound to the Nuggets. Will Barton and DeMarcus Cousins hit the mark from afar on second and third chances and Denver is moving forward (78-70).

After a great passage from DeMarcus Cousins, Nikola Jokic comes back into play and immediately receives his fifth foul. The Warriors then take the opportunity to finish a 16-6 with an award-winning shot from Gary Payton II which gives them the advantage (86-84). While both teams lacked juice, Stephen Curry and Nikola Jokic went blow for blow (90-90). Unfortunately for Denver, it was Aaron Gordon who cracked first when he lost a ball which led to a muscular lay-up from Curry which gave the Dubs a four-point lead with 90 seconds to play (94-90). Despite all the efforts of an incredible Nikola Jokic, Gary Payton II and Stephen Curry finish the job to send Golden State to the second round!

WHAT YOU MUST REMEMBER

– Aaron Gordon and the Nuggets dictate the tempo and set the tone. The first three possessions of the game for the Nuggets announced the color. As in Game 4, Aaron Gordon was determined to attack the circle. Three “drives”, three fouls caused on Draymond Green, Andrew Wiggins, and Klay Thompson. The Denver winger had seven free throws in the first quarter, and his team finished the first half with twenty free throws to only seven for the Warriors. The Nuggets played the aggressor and Golden State suffered, never able to truly gain control of the game or pick up the pace.

– The Warriors shoot themselves in the foot. While the duo Draymond Green – Stephen Curry had managed to bring the Warriors to -1 after being led by 10, they will miss the opportunity to regain the advantage by leaving two offensive rebounds to the Nuggets which turn into a 3- Barton points. The Dubs will make the same mistake on the next two possessions, allowing Denver to regain an eight-point lead. In all, the Nuggets will take 6 offensive rebounds in the third quarter which they will transform into eight points.

– A Stephen Curry – Nikola Jokic finale. Headliners of this series, Stephen Curry and Nikola Jokic gave us a finale worthy of their MVP status. The two stars went blow for blow. Jokic scored 12 points, including several incredible floaters while Curry scored 11 points, including several strong drives, and delivered two assists. These made the difference between the Warriors and the Nuggets. If Stephen Curry was able to count on Gary Payton II and Klay Thompson to assist him, Nikola Jokic was far too lonely, the symbol of this series and the Nuggets season.

TOPS/FLOPS

✅Stephen Curry. Decisive at the end of the match, Stephen Curry scored 20 of his 30 points after the break, including eleven in the last minutes of the match to confirm his team’s victory. He also distributed 5 assists, took 5 rebounds, but lost 5 balls.

✅ Nikola Jokic. Like Curry, Joker also scored 30 points, including 18 in the second half. He added 19 rebounds, 8 assists, and 6 lost balls. Although hit in the thigh, the Serb was everywhere and simply lacked help throughout the series.

✅ Gary Payton II. Steve Kerr drew the right card by opting for Gary Payton II in the second half. The fullback scored 10 points in the final quarter, including two game-winning shots to back up Curry. He was also decisive in defense.

✅ DeMarcus Cousins. Jokic’s lining responded to this night. With the Joker foul problem, the former Warrior bulldozed on offense to amass 19 of the Nuggets’ substitutes’ 23 points. This is his career high in the playoffs.

✅ ⛔Draymond Green. Green sounded the alarm clock for his team in the middle of the third quarter. He was again essential in his team’s victory but he should have set the tone from the start to prevent the Warriors from playing with fire.

Jordan Poole. For the second game in a row, Poole struggled against the Nuggets’ defensive aggression. He finished 3/10 on shots and was targeted on defense.

The Nuggets bench. With the exception of DeMarcus Cousins, Mike Malone’s replacements offered nothing to their team. They also scored no basket (0/10 on shots)! Only Bones Hyland has scored four free throws.
