Tesla’s Autopilot artificial intelligence director resigns amid massive layoffs.

Andrej Karpathy, chief AI officer at Tesla, who led the Autopilot vision team, announced on Thursday that he is leaving the company, as the electric car maker continues to lay off thousands of people. in all sectors.

In a tweet, Mr. Karpathy said he had no concrete plans for the future, but wanted to spend more time on his lifelong passions, namely technical work in the field of AI, open source and education.

Karpathy joined Tesla, led by Elon Musk, five years ago. He was on a four-month leave, which fueled speculation that he would return.

“It was a great pleasure to help Tesla achieve its goals over the past five years and a difficult decision to part ways. During this time, Autopilot has moved from lane keeping to city streets and I can’t wait to see the exceptionally strong team at Autopilot continue that momentum,” Karpathy posted.

Before joining Tesla in 2017, he was a researcher at OpenAI, the Musk-backed AI nonprofit.

His departure came as Tesla laid off 229 tagged employees from its Autopilot team and closed one of its offices in the United States.

According to a regulatory filing in the state of California in the United States, the electric car manufacturer has laid off employees from its San Mateo office, which employed 276 people.

The remaining 47 employees could be sent to work in Tesla’s Buffalo Autopilot office, according to TechCrunch.

The layoffs are part of the 10% reduction in salaried staff announced last month by Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
