Tetanus, hepatitis… Pharmacists are now authorized to administer 14 new vaccines

The National Convention for Licensed Pharmacists allows for the creation of a fee for the administration of vaccines prescribed by health professionals.

After influenza, Covid-19 and monkeypox, from this Monday French pharmacists can inoculate French men and women in possession of a doctor’s prescription with 14 new vaccines. This small revolution in the world of pharmacies “marks an unprecedented ambition for the development of the pharmacist’s role in the health system”, writes Sygesikringen.

The measure is part of the national convention for authorized pharmacists, published in the Official Journal of the European Union by decree of March 31, 2022. Two key measures in this text, namely the implementation of interviews for pregnant women and the expansion of their skills in the form of of vaccination, came into force on Monday.

Poliomyelitis, papillomavirus…

The last measure aims to “improve vaccination coverage in France and facilitate the process for the patient who wants to be vaccinated”, writes the National Order of Pharmacists on its site.

From now on, these health professionals will be able to vaccinate against diphtheriathat tetanusthat poliomyelitisthat whooping coughthem papilloma virus people, the invasive pneumococcal infectionsviruses of hepatitis A and B, the meningococci A, B, C, Y and W as well as the vaccine against rage.

Persons wishing to be vaccinated at the pharmacy must be in possession of a doctor’s prescription for the product.

The affected public? Minors aged 16 and over for whom one of these vaccinations is recommended in the current vaccination programme, but also adults.

Heading towards prescribing vaccines for pharmacists?

As for pharmacists, they must be trained and reported to the regional health office to which they are attached to carry out these new vaccinations. The measure is accompanied by the creation of a fee for the administration of serum.

“The advantage is that patients can waste less time or be taken care of faster”, greeted franceinfo Matthieu Saulnier, pharmacist in Nanterre.

Next step? Prescribing these vaccines by the pharmacies themselves. Currently, the latter is only authorized to prescribe the vaccine against influenza. A situation that the 2023 Social Security funding bill may change with its Article 20, which intends to allow pharmacists to prescribe certain vaccines.
