Vueling Airlines Will Accept Cryptocurrency Payments

From 2023, customers will be able to choose between 13 cryptocurrencies, including bitcoin, ethereum and dogecoin.

Cryptocurrencies are beginning to establish themselves in the economic ecosystem. New proof of this is that the Spanish airline Vueling announced this week that it would, from the beginning of 2023, accept payments in cryptocurrencies for private customers.

To offer this service, the subsidiary of the airline group IAG (British Airways, Iberia) has entered into a partnership with BitPay, a cryptocurrency payment service provider. The technological part comes back to the UATP payment solution, used by many airlines.

Ticket prices will be displayed in Euros and customers will be able to pay for their flight from over 100 wallets and choose between 13 different cryptocurrencies.“Said Vueling in a press release. For example, bitcoin, ethereum or dogecoin can be used.

Not the first company to allow cryptocurrencies

With this agreement, Vueling once again reaffirms its position as a digital airline“Said a spokesperson for the Spanish company, quoted in the press release. Vueling also insists on the supposedly safe aspect of this means of payment. “Paying with cryptocurrencies is a push transaction, meaning the user sends the exact amount, rather than a withdrawal like traditional credit or debit cards, eliminating transaction fraud and phishing.»

Vueling explains becoming thus “the first low-cost airline in Europe to accept cryptocurrencies as a means of payment“. In reality, other companies already offer payment in bitcoin: for example AirBaltic and Air Lituanica since 2014, or LOT Polish Airlines since 2015.
