Why is there no roaming agreement between charging networks?

Charging remains one of the most problematic aspects for EV owners or for those who wish to go electric. And it’s a shame because it could be avoided! Indeed, it would take two small nudges: automation in the detection of problems on terminals and agreements between operators in order to facilitate connection and sustain charging.

It should also be noted that the motorways have succeeded in doing so with tolls, so why not the charging operators?

As you might expect, the operation of an electric car is different from a gasoline-powered car. The electric car, no longer needing oil to operate, is therefore supplied with energy by a charging station which sends the energy to the charger on board the car. The latter transfers the energy to the battery which powers all the components of the car.

Electric vehicles operate using accumulators of electricity called batteries. A battery can have a greater or lesser capacity: 50kWh for example. It is therefore a question of charging with electricity from the power grid from your home, or at a public charging station.

In general, the electricity comes from the network and passes through single-phase cables to 7.4 kW chargers connected to a Wallbox or at a public terminal. There are also cables three-phase working with 11 kW chargers higher capacity, always plugged into a Wallbox or a public electric charging station.

Charging challenges?

The booming electric car market is at the dawn of its potential and arouses the interest of many players. Whether they position themselves as recharging or mobility operators, energy companies and car manufacturers are fighting to become the future main players in this market.

Like the projections of the actor RTE (Electricity Transport Network) which estimates the number of electric cars by 2035 between 5.5 and 15.6 million on the French market : the future of this trend and the share of electric cars in the automotive market is uncertain.

The development of a vast, interoperable network of charging stations with “ultra-fast” technology is therefore a sine qua none condition. the general public’s adoption of electric cars.

What are the current charging issues?

For prospects wishing to find out about the possibilities of recharging, Total Energies appears to be one of the operators with regular malfunctions. Gold, if the deployment is important, the quality of service also matters. And in this specific case, it is obviously the charging stations that work the least.

The Internet user who reported this problem to us directly telephoned the persons concerned: why are the terminals non-functional? No date has been given for the repair, although we have not used to seeing service stations out of order…

A multi-speed network

This reveals all the more acutely the problem of a multi-speed network. On the one hand, the owners of Tesla for whom everything works well, on the other, the charging stations resulting from a showdown between the public authorities and the private sector.

Ongoing misunderstandings in the market

There is still, even after years, a youth problem. That is to say that there are notions and information that the operators do not have. What is needed, and it is currently at work, is for the brands that are deploying to work more and more with the manufacturers…

What about interoperability work?

Recharging is a colossal expectation that must be met with significant investments and a good dose of willpower. Working in interoperability would thus be a better choice for EV owners.

The principle would be somewhat identical to Tesla’s Superchargers but with more stations open. There are indeed quite a few compared to the total number… Would this kind of initiative allow you to take the plunge?
