Women’s Euro: Ada Hegerberg and Norway eliminated, Austria against Germany in the quarterfinals

Ada Hegerberg and Norway will not play the quarter-finals of the Euro, and that is logical. Pulverized by England (0-8) in their previous match, the Scandinavians absolutely had to beat Austria to pass the group stage.

But it was their opponent who dominated this meeting from start to finish, and the Austrian victory (1-0), obtained on a fine header from Billa after a perfect opening from Hanshaw (37th), could have been much wider. Because Laura Feiersinger’s shot, poorly captured by Pettersen, crashed on the bar (12th) and Makas, in an ideal position, saw his shot deflected by the Norwegian goalkeeper and graze the post (73rd).

The awakening of Norway came far too late and this selection therefore left the competition from the group stage, as during the previous Euro, then ended with three defeats. Second in Group A, Austria, semi-finalists in 2017, will face Germany in the next round. The winner of this confrontation will challenge France in the semi-finals, if Les Bleues qualify.

In the other Group A match, the English easily won against Northern Ireland (5-0), thanks to goals from Kirby, Mead, a double from Russo and an own goal from Burrows. England finish top of this group.
