Kimberly Garcia Leon offered Peru the very first medal in its history at the World Athletics Championships by winning gold after the 20 km walk. This is the first title awarded at the Eugene Worlds, the very first contested on American soil.
Garcia Leon completed this 20 km, launched under a blazing sun at midday, in 1 h 26 min 58 s, a new national record. The Peruvian walker won ahead of the Polish Katarzyna Zdzieblo, 2nd at 33 seconds, and the Chinese Shijie Qieyang, 3rd at 58 seconds.
China’s Hong Liu, quadruple world champion in the specialty (2011, 2013, 2015 and 2019), 2016 Olympic champion and Olympic bronze medalist again last summer, only ranked 5th, just over two minutes.
